Crossing Borders

2020
Master Thesis

Cyprus is a hundred in one, a divided country, a colorful mix of stunning landscapes, cultures, and people. 32 personal stories, photographs, and interpretations reach to give a broad picture and wide impression of the diversity of this beautiful island combined with the topic of borders. Borders set by society, borders defined by politics, borders given by nature as well as borders within us. Cyprus still lives with the unique situation of being divided since the 1974 war. The Green Line, which runs through Northern and Southern Cyprus is not the only "border" that divides people, but rather the borders in human's minds. COVID-19 has imposed additional restrictions on people's lives in 2020, including the confinement of hundreds of people in a refugee camp, and the first closure of all checkpoints since they opened in 2003. This means a further step backwards on the road to reunification for Cypriots, and yet another border they will have to cross.
